Led Royals to Diocesan title after 0-6 start

Bob Mackey and the Christ the King girls basketball team had a rough start to their season.
The Royals were 0-6, an unfathomable start for a team that historically is used to nothing but success.
Standout Rayne Connell was injured at the time, and everyone tried to fill her shoes, Mackey said.
“We had to make some adjustments,” Mackey said.
Soon after, “Everybody started to click a little bit.”
The Royals beat Cicero North-Syracuse, the eventual state champion. In that game, Mackey stuck guards instead of forwards on the nation’s top prospect, Cicero’s 6-4 Breanna Stewart.
Later in the season, CK was counted out again after losing a tie-breaker game to Archbishop Molloy, but the Royals pulled off a shocker by beating Nazareth in the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan semifinals, 54-53. The Royals followed that up by pushing past Bishop Ford for the Diocesan title.
“We were playing to win,” said Mackey, the Daily News girls basketball Coach of the Year. “(Other) teams were playing not to lose.”
Though they narrowly missed a second win against Nazareth, the Royals' run was impressive nonetheless, especially considering its poor start. By the e
